![]() ![]() 2021’s WF-1000XM4 are smaller, lighter, sound better and last longer, and their ANC gets you so close to what Sony does with its full headphones that the reasons not to buy them are vanishingly small. The Sony WF-1000XM4 buds (right) are smaller and lighter than the Sony WF-1000XM3s (left), but they’re still quite a bit larger than most of the premium wireless earbud options out there. It feels a little like Sony overheard all the times I recommended the old WF-1000XM3, and took my caveats to heart. The battery in the case can fully recharge the earbuds twice, for 24-46 hours in total, depending on if you have noise cancellation running. ![]() Eight hours from the earbuds alone, and that’s with ANC turned on: switch it off, and you get another four hours. With dramatically enhanced call quality, IPX4 water resistance, and up to 24 hours of battery life with wireless charging, the Sony WF-1000XM4 Truly Wireless. It’s frustrating because the WF-1000XM4’s battery life make them an excellent match for this hybrid age of remote working and Zoom meetings. Please, Sony, make better names The WF-1000XM4 is Sony’s noise-canceling answer to the AirPods Pro Hands-on: 280 earbuds feature new design and promise improved noise canceling. The WF-1000XM4 headphones are the product of that research, combining a shape that matches the ear cavity with a new ergonomic surface design for a more stable. Nowhere near dealbreaker levels, no, but still something to bear in mind if you’re on voice and video chats all day long. Sony says it pairs its beamforming microphones with ANC and bond conduction sensors, so that they know when you’re actually talking, but the results can still be a little jagged. ![]() Similarly, Apple’s earbuds have the edge when it comes to microphone performance for calls. ![]()
